Reading Theatre(KG to Std. 2)

reading_theater

We all know that reading is a very important skill. Our students work on this skill regularly with their teachers in school and they give a demonstration to the parents through the Reading Theatre Activity.

At Walnut School, READING is a part of their timetable from Nursery to Std. 4.

In this READING THEATRE demonstration, the students come together in small groups and read out one of the banded books that they have been reading. They read aloud by taking turns with their friends in front of the parents as the audience.

Parents have to simply come and enjoy their performance and not worry about preparing these students at home for this event! The details of the time of the event, reporting room etc. are sent in a personalized email.

Some FAQs about this event for attending parents
  • Can the reporting time be changed to another slot?
Nope. The students are grouped as per their reading levels.
  • My child cannot come on that Saturday. Can we come on a different day?
Nope. But do note these opportunities are hard to come by and have to be specially created and benefit the kids immensely. So we hope whatever you are missing this for is worth it!
  • If I reach late, is it a problem?
Yes. The group that your child is in will not be disturbed once their reading starts. So latecomers are welcome to watch, but cannot join the group.
  • How long will my child actually be reading aloud in this group?
About 2 to 3 minutes in 30 second spurts
  • Can we bring along some relatives also to watch our children perform?
Absolutely! Kids need their cheering squad and fans 🙂
  • Can we take photos / videos?
कोई शक? Of course you can. Memories! Let’s make as many as we can!
  • What if my child does not read on that day?
They will. Their teachers are there to motivate them to do at least a little bit in front of the crowd. And you all will be there to encourage them too. For a child who feels stage fright, this is an excellent opportunity to take the first baby step towards public speaking. Let’s make it happen.
  • Can we watch other kids performing?
Yes, you most definitely can! It will be great for your child to see others performing and you can encourage other kids as well.
  • Is this a competition?
Technically no. But we will be giving out participation certificates to all students who perform.

Book Handover

Every child of Std. 1 and 2 in Walnut becomes an author of an original story. They write this in Language Arts. Do click on the link to understand the how, what, why of this class!

This project, that the children complete, is a remarkable achievement. Which other child their age anywhere can say they have written an “original story” and compiled it into a book form – all on their own?

The school and the students are very proud of the hard work and creativity that the students put into this project. In that case, it  must be specially acknowledged, shouldn’t it? For this, we invite parents to come and collect the original storybook in a small handover ceremony. Each student also gets a budding author certificate.

In the book handover ceremony, the students read out some part of their creation and then take it home. The family can read it at home, show it off to friends and family and appreciate the child’s efforts – we insist! 🙂

STEM Demo (KG to Std. 5)

Walnut School

Walnut students learn and understand new concepts through classroom learning as well as through practical hands-on activities in their Science Lab class.

In this STEM Demo, in small groups, students perform an experiment for the parents. They explain what they are doing and why they get the results that they do. Parents have to just come with the kids at the designated time and place. They do not need to prepare anything at home, everything is taken care of in the school itself.

We encourage full participation in these activities for many reasons

  • So that the students get “warmed up” for the science fairs that happen in higher classes
  • They get used to explaining what they have understood to a varied audience
  • They get the feel of a formal presentation
  • They get a feel of teamwork and project work

FAQs about the STEM demo
  • Can the reporting time be changed to another slot?
Nope. The students are grouped and have been practising as per their demonstrations.
  • My child cannot come on that Saturday. Can we come on a different day?
Nope. But do note these opportunities are hard to come by and have to be specially created and benefit the kids immensely. So we hope whatever you are missing this for is worth it!
  • If I reach late, is it a problem?
Yes. The group that your child is in will not be disturbed once their demonstration starts. So latecomers are welcome to watch, but cannot join the group.
  • How long will my child actually be demonstrating in this group?
The whole project demo will be about 10 minutes. Each child will have about 2 to 3 minutes of presentation.
  • Can we bring along some relatives also to watch our children perform?
Since this is the first time our children would be demonstrating an experiment, we would be deliberately limiting the audience per child for this event so as to not “scare” or intimidate the students. 2 people per child are most welcome to attend.
  • Can we take photos / videos?
कोई शक? Of course you can. Memories! Let’s make as many as we can!
  • What if my child does not participate in the experiment on that day?
They will. Their teachers are there to motivate them to do at least a little bit in front of the crowd. And you all will be there to encourage them too. For a child who feels stage fright, this is an excellent opportunity to take the first baby step towards public speaking. Let’s make it happen.
  • Can we watch other kids performing?Yes, you most definitely can! It will be great for your child to see others performing and you can encourage other kids as well. But we do request that you give preference to the parents of the performing children, and occupy the seats toward the back of the venue, in such a case.
  • Is this a competition?
No. But we will be giving out participation certificates to all students who perform

Sports (KG to Std. 5)

With daily sports, Walnut students learn many new skills. A great way that our toddlers and young students can show off is by playing sports with their peers within the same age group. Sports demonstrations are where this happens. Here too, the parents come as visitors, and our students conduct a sports activity for them to see. One thing to notice in all our demonstrations is that since our students get so many chances to present right from KG, their confidence and art of presentation keeps getting better year after year. The best way towards “personality development”!
