At a recent conference on Artificial Intelligence in education, our Director, Dr. Arpita Karkare, delivered an insightful speech on how AI is transforming schools and the essential skills teachers need to adapt effectively.
Leveraging AI in Education
Dr. Karkare emphasized that AI can be a powerful assistant, but only if educators are clear about what they need. This requires practice and good communication skills to form precise prompts. “The more you try, the better you get,” she encouraged.
The Importance of Domain Knowledge and Teacher’s Role
She also highlighted the importance of strong domain knowledge, as AI can sometimes generate random or incorrect information. Teachers must remain alert and guide AI to ensure accuracy. AI can provide more ideas, alternative presentations of material, additional exercises, and even answer keys. By doing so, it offers teachers more time to focus on creativity and their students.
Rethinking Assignments for the AI Generation
One of her key points was that students also have access to AI at home. They are often quick to adapt and may be more proficient at using the technology than their teachers. As a result, Dr. Karkare stressed that traditional assignments are becoming obsolete. Educators need to rethink homework to ensure they are not simply evaluating AI-generated responses, but instead fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Staying Ahead with AI
Dr. Karkare’s insights reinforce that while AI is a helpful tool, it is essential for teachers to stay ahead and evolve with these technologies to continue inspiring and guiding students effectively.
The Human Touch in the Age of AI
This conference was a timely reminder that while AI can enhance education, it is the human touch that makes learning impactful.
