  • Walnut Scholars have a “Language Arts” block every week. This is when they come together to write and illustrate their own book in small groups.
  • After that we publish it and share it with the family. So, each of our students becomes a “published author”. Isn’t that amazing?

  • All these skills become more and more important when they grow older but the skill needs to be developed in the early stages of their education, which is in their primary and secondary school itself.
  • Learning to write well is difficult and (let’s face it ) it’s not the activity of choice for most students. So, how do we make it happen anyway at Walnut? Through guided movie review assignments!
  • Students have to watch certain movies as a whole or in parts (which they love, no problem there) and then they have to answer some questions based on it. These are not standard comprehension questions. They require a lot of thought, opinions, alternative plot twists and creative writing and all the while it stays so interesting that students don’t mind doing it.
  • Writing well is difficult and a skill that needs to be practiced and it needs to be practiced regularly. Such creative writing assignments from time to time make sure that students enjoy writing and keep working on developing that skill further.
Arts Awareness
